With Women
In June of 2011 my daughter Lilith was born. I had planned a home birth but all did not go as planned. I was transported by ambulance to the closest hospital and Lilith was safely born there. When I was pregnant with my second child I redid all of my research and recommitted to a home birth. I was convinced that this time things would go smoothly. And they did... right up until the end. Although Sebastian was born at home in our dining room he was immediately transported, again by ambulance, to the same close hospital. From there he was moved to a different hospital that offered neonatal care.
Although he was able to come home relatively quickly I did not recover as easily as he. I struggled with, and sometimes still do, postpartum depression. As a dancer I often use movement to work through difficulties - both emotional and physical. With Women is my way of working through the trauma of Sebastian's birth.
In the first act a wonderful local artist, Kara Watters Lake will read the transcript from Sebastian's birth while I dance a solo. The movement is designed to accent her words and ranges from stillness to frantic desperation. The second act has seven dancers (Nathan Burton, Amia Cervantes, Coulter Cluett, Ashima Fillbach, Chelsea Palin Bridget Wheeler and one TBA) and will take you on an emotional ride as they move between fast, dynamic dancing and slower, emotional moments.
This is my first evening length work and I am beyond excited to again bring it to the public. Starting in July we will begin an intensive rehearsal period and I can't wait to see what the new dancers will bring to this piece.
